  1. S/F

    Start / finish

Inverness Castle — circuit start and finish

The route organisation identifies Inverness Castle as the official circuit anchor. Begin with a walk beside the River Ness; the selected coastal stops represent highlights, not a complete road-by-road itinerary around the Highlands.

  2. 1

    Village / small town

    Applecross

After the Bealach na Bà approach, Applecross offers a shoreline pause where mountains meet the sea. Walk through the village and look across the water before continuing along the western coastal corridor.

  3. 2

    Village / small town

    Torridon

Torridon places the journey beneath some of the Highlands' most imposing mountains and beside reflective sea-loch scenery. Allow a settled village stop rather than reducing the area to a quick photograph from the road.

  4. 3

    Village / small town

    Ullapool

The harbour village is a place for a waterfront walk and locally landed seafood. It also provides a base for nearby beaches and mountain country; those excursions need their own allowance beyond the circuit.

  5. 4

    Village / small town

    Durness

Durness is the northern coastal settlement associated with Smoo Cave. Park and explore the cave approach on foot; deeper summer boat visits are a separate activity whose operation should be checked directly.

  6. 5

    Village / small town

    John o' Groats

This coastal settlement offers views across the Pentland Firth and the familiar harbour-side signpost. Pause by the water before the circuit turns south; the map selects this stop without implying every northern headland detour.

Why this road.

The North Coast 500 is a framework for a slow journey around the northern Highlands. Its west coast brings mountain walls and sea lochs; the north and east broaden the horizon toward beaches, headlands and working coastal settlements. Riding the circuit gives continuity to those changing landscapes, but the most useful itinerary leaves space between the famous stops. Consider a night in a smaller community and time on foot by a harbour. This route note proposes no rally date or hosted tour.

The rhythm of the ride.

The loop combines country roads with single-track sections and the hairpins of Bealach na Bà. Treat passing places as part of the riding rhythm, allowing oncoming vehicles and faster local traffic through. Break up a group so it can fit between passing places rather than travel as a tight convoy. Rural sight lines can be short at bends, dips and summits, and unfenced animals may enter the road. Plan daily distance around that character and regular fuel stops, not the route's name.

Make time for the place.

Ullapool's harbour and locally landed seafood are one reason to stop beyond a photograph. Applecross and the smaller coastal settlements offer time to notice village life between the bigger landscape moments. Choose local cafés, groceries and small accommodation businesses as part of the itinerary, checking seasonal hours yourself. Leave passing places and working accesses clear so visitors' pauses do not interrupt the people whose daily journeys use these roads.

Season & access.

Editorial preference: late spring to early autumn, allowing flexible days for Highland weather. Conditions can change quickly in any month; verify road reports, forecasts and seasonal business hours. Source review does not mean the pass or the full circuit is currently open.

  • Use passing places for traffic flow; do not park in them or block field entrances.
  • Watch for livestock and deer on unfenced stretches.
  • Leave room between riders on single-track roads so passing places remain usable.
  • Expect wet surfaces, blind bends and rapidly changing weather.

Conditions, restrictions and ferry operations can change. A source review is not a live road report. Use current local information and ride within your experience.
