Rural Connections Lab
Learning in the field.
How can riding cultures strengthen connections between cities and rural communities—and under what conditions do those connections create lasting local value?
Proposed research direction · Methods in development
Research that travels with the work.
World Riders Rally is developing an independent field initiative informed by founder James TJ Lee’s doctoral studies in sociology at the University of Coimbra. The proposed focus connects mobility, cultural exchange, urban–rural relationships and AI-enabled independent enterprise.
The thesis direction and any university-linked research arrangements remain subject to academic review. The Rural Connections Lab is a project working name, not an established University of Coimbra research centre or doctoral workstation.
Questions before conclusions.
We want to understand what visiting riders bring, who benefits and what lasts. We will listen to residents, hosts, creators and participants, including people who find an activity inconvenient or unhelpful.
Local economic value
Accommodation nights, local purchasing and paid collaborations, with clear sources and reporting limits.
Relationships & return
Repeat visits and collaboration after the original journey.
Youth & enterprise
Paid opportunities, tested products, continuing customers and creator retention over time.
Culture & representation
Local participation, consent and control over stories, images and creative outputs.
Environment & daily life
Transport choices, noise, group capacity, waste and resident feedback.
How we intend to learn.
The proposed approach combines host interviews, participant observation, simple activity records and follow-up at agreed intervals. Each pilot should begin with a baseline and state where data are self-reported, recorded by businesses or collected through research.
Any formal research involving people will begin with an appropriate protocol, informed consent and the necessary academic review. Taking part in an activity will not automatically enrol someone in research.
Publication & independence.
No impact results are published yet. We plan to share methods, field notes and findings as the work develops. Sponsorship and operational interests will be disclosed; research conclusions will not be sold as a partnership benefit.
