  1. S

    Start

    Peso da Régua

Start the highlighted N222 section at Régua, a town closely connected with Port wine. The Douro Museum offers useful context for the terraces, estates and working river landscape ahead.

  2. 1

    Village / small town

    Folgosa do Douro

Folgosa’s riverside pier provides an off-bike pause directly beside the Douro. Look across the reservoir towards Covelinhas vineyards and notice how the village connects river tourism with the cultivated slopes.

  3. 2

    Village / small town

Valença do Douro — hillside detour

Optional hillside detour above the N222: this former municipal seat retains a pillory and old civic buildings. Wine, olives and almonds connect its village heritage with the continuing agricultural landscape.

  4. F

    Finish

    Pinhão

Finish the short riverside itinerary at Pinhão in the Cima Corgo wine area. Set aside time ashore to understand the surrounding estates, keeping any wine tasting separate from the riding day.

Why this road.

Few short roads show the relationship between landscape and labour as clearly as this Douro section. The river provides the line; terraces and schist walls show how generations made the slopes productive. Régua and Pinhão place the ride within a wider wine region, with museums, railway heritage and villages worth time off the motorcycle. The appeal lies in that concentration: a modest distance can hold a full day's attention when the scenery is understood as a living place.

The rhythm of the ride.

This entry covers the celebrated 27-kilometre section between Régua and Pinhão, rather than the N222's much longer journey from the Porto area towards Foz Côa. Portugal's infrastructure authority records 93 bends on the highlighted stretch and describes its close relationship with the Douro's left bank. On a motorcycle, make the curves an invitation to a measured pace. Stop before studying the terraces or taking photographs, and leave any additional estate or hillside visits outside the quoted road distance.

Make time for the place.

Port and Douro table wine come from a landscape built around terraces, vines and skilled work. Régua's Douro Museum offers context, while Pinhão sits within the Cima Corgo wine area. Visits can explore growing, processing and local history rather than only tasting. Any purchase or arranged visit should respect the working estate's availability; no property here is a World Riders Rally partner.

Season & access.

Editorial preference: spring or autumn with a favourable forecast. September–October brings harvest context; dates and access at individual estates vary.

  • 27 km describes only the highlighted section
  • Frequent bends require attention throughout
  • Estate and hill-village detours add distance
  • Keep wine tasting separate from riding
